Do you suffer from persistent pain in the neck as you sit and work for long hours in front of computer screens? Well, the pain aggravates as you spend more and more time staring at e-readers, tablets, and smartphones.

This happens because we spend a lot of time sitting in wrong postures while using gadgets, which puts pressure on our backbone and the connecting muscles and ligaments.

You may apply heat to the affected areas, keep your movements contained, or take pain relievers to get instant relief from neck or cervical spondylitis. But in the long run, you need to change the way you sit in front desktops or laptops. So, here we share some tips about how one should sit in front of computers.

1. Try to sit with both feet touching the floor: If you just follow this, it will discourage slouching more than crossing your legs or twisting them around the bottom of the chair.

2. Position your monitor: Your monitor should be about an arm's length from you, and centered in a way you look directly at the screen with your neck in a relaxed position. The top portion of the monitor should be about 2-3 inches above your eye level.

3. You can adjust chair seat and back: Try to adjust the position of the seat in a way your back gets support and your knees be no higher than your hips. You can also use a small cushion behind your lower back.

4. Position your keyboard: You shouldn't need to twist your body to type on it, so it should be centered in front of you. It should be placed close so that you can use it with your shoulders relaxed and your elbows close to your body.

5. Sit straight: It happened to each one of us that when we get involved in what we are doing, we forget our posture. Check your posture and correct your position as soon as it strikes your mind. Make a habit to sit straight.

6. Adjust your keyboard: If you've a laptop, buy a keyboard so that you can move and adjust it independently. Tilt in a way you can access it comfortably. Keep your hand in a neutral position.

Recently, there was a WhatsApp message that featured four youngsters sitting together totally engrossed in their mobiles. The message indicated that they were conversing in GenNext style - no talking, only texting. While it was forwarded, a hidden message was almost missed: Are we readying a generation that will end up with posture disorders, arthritis or cervical spondylosis?

Doctors said that if this was a habit or routine, it would affect the general health of kids. Experts in the West have already begun talking of text neck syndrome and the influences of this addiction on teenage brains. Well known neuropsychiatrist Daniel Siegel in his book `Brainstorm: The power and purpose of the teenage brain' said that between 12 and 24, the brain changes in `important and often maddening' ways. This development influences teenage behavior.

"There is a huge problem among our kids who are busy viewing things on screen rather than talking to others around them. If you notice their posture, the neck is always bent while they text, chat or play games. Instead of talking, they are busy messaging," said Dr Sachidananda Kamath, former national president of Indian Association of Paediatrics.

Going to work each day puts more wear and tear on the body than most people realize.
And that’s true even when their 40-hour work week requires nothing more than the seemingly safe activity of sitting at a desk all day.

“We tend to think that people with active lifestyles – the weekend warrior types – are the only ones who have to worry about physical injuries,” says Dr. Vladimir Alexander, an orthopedic surgeon and founder of Alexander Orthopaedic Associates.

“But sitting in front of a computer all day also can lead to numerous issues, from back problems to an aching neck. And over time, what start out as mild symptoms can develop into more serious, and even debilitating, conditions.”

For example, lower back pain is one of the leading causes of disability.
“People working at a computer slouch, they slump with their heads leaning forward, they don’t take breaks,” Alexander says. “None of that is conducive to good health.”
He says some of the typical conditions full-time work leads to and ways to alleviate the pain include:
  • Back problems. About 80 percent of the U.S. population suffers from back problems, making that one of the more common ailments people face. That percentage could seem high until you realize just about every full-time job – not just those that involve heavy lifting – can cause stress to the back. For those tied to a desk and computer all day, one way to alleviate some of the pain and problems is to be sure to maintain good posture and to use a chair that supports your back. Getting away from the computer periodically also helps.
  • Neck and shoulder problems. Sedentary jobs really can be a pain in the neck, not to mention the shoulders. Jobs that require repetitive motions – which can include factory jobs or working a cash register – also can be detrimental to the neck and shoulders (Cervical Spondylitis).As with back problems, proper posture can help. So can taking breaks.
  • Hip and knee problems. Sitting for hours on end isn’t the only thing that can give rise to work-related maladies. Many people, such as restaurant workers, nurses and flight attendants, are on their feet all day. They may experience knee and hip problems from all that standing and walking. Comfortable shoes and good posture can help, as can orthopedic care.
“The physical difficulties people suffer at work are going to vary depending on the type of job you do and your particular constitution,” Alexander says. “But regardless of what’s ailing you, regular medical care is important to being able to treat the underlying problem and to staying healthy.”

We need to get on Our feet for at least two hours a day to beat the nation's back pain epidemic, according to a new study.

Millions of us are spending far too long sitting down, leading to a variety of crippling lumbar problems.

The new research, from backpainhelp.com found that some seven million people are now sitting for nine hours or more a day.
Office workers are particularly locked in such a sedentary lifestyle, despite being aware that it leads to back pain and other health risks such as diabetes, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression.
Some 21 per cent of us confess to sitting between seven and eight hours per day, while 32 per cent remain seated for between five and six hours, 26 per cent between three and four hours and only seven per cent sat for under two hours.
The average amount of time people sit per day is a lengthy five hours and 34 minutes.
Researchers said the findings came despite the medical profession now encouraging people to stand up and move around more.
New guidance published in The British Journal of Sports Medicine, recommends office workers should be on their feet for a minimum of two hours a day during working hours.
And the new survey found our sedentary lifestyles is contributing to an epidemic of back-related sickness and absenteeism.
Mark Critchley, spokesman for backpainhelp.com said: "Back pain-related absenteeism has long been an issue, but how many businesses are actually looking at the causes?
"Do they realise that in one in three instances, it is the work itself that's actually the root of the problem?"
He added: "Over a third of people in our survey want their employer to take measures to improve their back health; it would be an investment that could help cut absenteeism and affect a business's bottom line in the future, which can only be a positive thing."
The new survey found that some 38 per cent of people in the UK claimed work caused their back or cervical pain.
A further 35 per cent of those questioned believed their employers should put measures or additional measures in place to try and prevent it.




Official figures reveal around three million days were lost to work-related back disorders in 2014/15, with 223,000 cases annually and an average 13.3 days lost for each case.
While traditionally it has been manual workers that have a high prevalence of back pain, the survey also revealed that desk workers are now increasingly suffering too, with 31 per cent saying their office work stations caused bad posture and back pain.
This figure rose to 41 per cent in the 25-34 year old age bracket.
For the both sexes, back pain also has a detrimental effect on emotional wellbeing with 33 per cent admitting to being short-tempered and 31pet cent being stressed when they were suffering.
Some 45 per cent of the 2,000 survey respondents said they felt some colleagues did not take their pain seriously, simply because it could not be seen.
