Have a weird ache in your elbow, or has your neck started feeling sore? It may be all your smartphone's fault. "Our bodies weren't meant to hunch forward and hold out a phone all day," says Jaime Quinn, DPT, a physical therapist with the Professional Physical Therapy network. Here, five ways your smartphone could be hurting you—plus how to correct them so you can safely enjoy using your phone.

What's Hurting: Your Thumb

Years ago "BlackBerry thumb" was a big issue because striking the keypad put lots of stress on that finger. Now, even though smartphones have touch screens (which require less pressure), the thumb is still getting its fair share of strain due to overuse, as many people use it to scroll and text.
Correct It: Try your best to mix it up and use other fingers, says Quinn. If you're really feeling pain, consider seeing a doctor, who may recommend a thumb splint to provide support and ease the ache.

What's Hurting: Your Neck

There's a universal texting posture, and it isn't a good one. "I see patients all day because of neck pain due to poor posture—and smartphone usage is contributing to it," says Kenneth K. Hansraj, MD, chief of spine surgery at New York Spine Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine. In one study, Dr. Hansraj found that looking down at your phone puts roughly 60 pounds of pressure on the spine (compared to about a dozen pounds when you're standing up straight). "Over time, you get tenderness in your neck, and your muscles may start to spasm—eventually, your bones can even start to change," says Dr. Hansraj.
Correct It: Rather than tilting your head down, keep it up and bring your phone higher to meet it. "Some people forget you also have a range of motion with your eyes, and that you can look down without tilting your whole head," adds Dr. Hansraj.

What's Hurting: Your Elbow

Keeping your elbow bent in a flexed position (like when you hold your phone out in front of you) may strain the nerves that pass through the elbow joint, causing pain and tingling that can radiate from there to the hand. Also, many people keep their wrists in a fixed position while texting, which can put extra stress on the muscles of the forearm, says Quinn. Straining those muscles may lead to pain at the elbow and wrist, similar to the pain you'd get with tennis or golf elbow.
Correct It: Switch hands often, especially when you're reading an article that requires you to hold your phone for a long time.

What's Hurting: Your Back

It's not just your head that tilts forward to look at your phone. "When you bend your neck and shoulders forward, the muscles in the front get tighter and the ones in back get weaker, so you're reinforcing a muscle imbalance over time," says Quinn. Result: back pain and tension (and potentially more doctor's visits down the line).
Correct It: Throughout the day, really pay attention to your posture. Stand up straight with your shoulders back and make a conscious effort to resist slouching. "Often, people will wait until they're in a lot of pain before they start making any changes," notes Dr. Hansraj. Also, consider doing yoga to increase flexibility in your spine.

What's Hurting: Your Wrist

Ever heard of "text claw"? It's the slightly disturbing, not-exactly-medical name for the pain you get when your wrists are in a fixed texting position for an extended period. This puts you at risk for straining the tendons and joints in your wrist up to your elbow.
Correct It: Alternate hands when you use your phone—it helps not only your elbow, but also your wrists. Try to do most of your daily work at a desktop or laptop, as many people have better ergonomic setups at their computer (such as wrist pads). If you already have serious wrist pain, you may need a brace to keep the joint in neutral, putting less pressure on the soft tissue structures that may have become inflamed, says Quinn.

Habitual craning forward over screens can produce the pain of ‘text neck.’
The Ache: In the digital age, many people spend hours daily bent over computers, phones and tablets—our necks craned forward. Some scientists say this unnatural position can lead to pain, headaches and other symptoms, sometimes collectively called “text neck.
The Claim: Technology itself comes to the rescue. An Android app called the Text Neck Indicator measures the angle of your phone and lets you know when you’re holding it in a favorable viewing position. And a new wearable device, Alex, monitors the angle of your neck and vibrates when your posture is poor
The Verdict: Neither product has been tested in a human study. Some scientists say the technological nannies are a good idea. Others caution that neck pain and headaches have complex causes, and—to the surprise of some researchers—a recent study found that better posture doesn’t necessarily prevent pain.
The Text Neck Indicator, invented by Plantation, Fla., chiropractor Dean L. Fishman, shows a green light when your phone is tilted toward you at an “acceptable” viewing angle, defined by the app as at least 65 degrees from the horizontal, says Dr. Fishman. The goal is to encourage people to use their phones with their head in neutral position, with the ears over the shoulders, rather than craned forward, he says. Dr. Fishman has trademarked the term Text Neck.

Alex, a small device worn behind the neck from Namu Inc. of Seoul, vibrates when the neck is tilted too far forward. Using an iPhone or Android app, the user calibrates the device by touching the screen when in good posture and poor posture. Alex was launched on Kickstarter and sells on Indiegogo for $99.
If you already have pain, “there may be a benefit if you use something like this in conjunction with an exercise program that strengthens neck muscles and muscles stabilizing the head,” says Alan S. Hilibrand, professor of spinal surgery at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and a spokesman for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
In 2014, a study in the journal Surgical Technology International used a computer model to calculate that the force to the cervical spine—the seven vertebrae in the neck region—increased from 10 or 12 pounds with the head in a neutral position to 27 pounds at a 15-degree forward tilt and 49 pounds at 45 degrees.
The extra force results in more load on discs, which can eventually degenerate and lead to chronic neck pain, says study co-author Kenneth K. Hansraj, a cervical surgeon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Technological reminders, such as Alex and the Text Neck Indicator, can help “raise awareness” about good posture, adds Dr. Hansraj, who has no link to Dr. Fishman or Namu.

Some scientists say that, for reasons not yet fully understood, poor posture doesn’t appear to be as linked to neck pain as common sense would suggest. A study of 1,108 adolescents published earlier in May in the journal of the American Physical Therapy Association found no link between posture, including neck tilted forward, and either pain or headaches.
“Can you say to the whole population: If you improve your posture you reduce your risk of neck pain? We haven’t the evidence to say that,” says study co-author Leon M. Straker. a professor of physiotherapy at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. Still, devices such as Alex could be helpful for certain people who have noticed that their pain increases with prolonged periods in poor posture, he adds.

In testing Alex, I liked that I could adjust the neck tilt the device considered “bad,” which allowed me to set reasonable goals. I also liked that the device allowed me to choose how long it gave me before vibrating to warn of poor posture. I chose to have it vibrate after my neck had been craned forward for a minute.
In a brief test of the Text Neck Indicator, on a friend’s Android phone, I found that tilting the device until the light turned green improved my posture from my habitual neck crane to a smaller bend forward. To achieve a neutral position, I needed to not only tilt the phone as prompted by the app, but also move it high in front of my face.
That illustrates the trade-off between improving your neck angle and potentially causing your shoulders and arms to hurt, says Jack Dennerlein, director of the occupational biomechanics and ergonomics laboratory at Northeastern University in Boston. To reduce stress on muscles when raising the phone, hold your arms closer to your body, says Dr. Fishman, adding that holding the phone at a proper angle and height gets easier with improved strength and muscle memory.
Craning your neck occasionally isn’t a bad thing, but it is best for the body to move and a change position often, says Eric K. Robertson, director of graduate physical therapy education for Kaiser Permanente in Northern California and a spokesman for the American Physical Therapy Association. When you’re working on a computer or using a device, try to take a break every 15 or 20 minutes and stretch or change position, he says.

Mothers come in all sizes and descriptions it's true,
But please know we're thankful for each one of you.
Some have many children, some have only one,
But each mother gave life to a daughter or son.

You may feel neglected and you may be, it's true,
But at least for today we want to thank you.
You not only gave birth but you guided and led,
And you saw that your children were clothed and were fed.

You taught us each night to kneel down and pray,
And things that you told us we remember today.
You may not always be "with it" or dressed all in style,
But my, you are lovely when at us you smile.

Some of you mothers are grandmothers too,
So your days for teaching children are certainly not through.
Grandchildren love grandmothers and need them you see,
To love them and teach them and their friend to be.

Thank God you're a mother and enjoy today,
And know that we mean all the good things we say.
We love you and need you every day of the year,
And we're glad to express it when Mother's Day is here.

We tell God we're thankful for each one of you,
But so often we're neglectful and forget to tell you.
So as children or grandchildren or as husbands too,
We say and we mean, "MOTHERS, WE LOVE YOU."

The shoulder joint is capable of tremendous mobility to assist in the essential activities of everyday life. It relies upon a group of muscles, known as the rotator cuff, to ensure its function for overhead and lifting activities.

Unfortunately, the rotator cuff is commonly associated with injury. Such injuries may occur from a simple fall onto the shoulder or even from the accumulation of simple lifting events over our lifetime.
The most common symptoms are pain, weakness and motion loss. Symptoms may develop suddenly or in a gradual onset. Symptoms that persist beyond a two week period, without signs of relief, should be evaluated by an orthopaedic surgeon.

An initial evaluation will consist of a physical examination and imaging studies in the form of an x-ray and MRI. The information obtained will be used to determine the degree of damage to the rotator cuff and to help formulate the most successful treatment plan.

Depending on the degree of injury or response to conservative treatment, surgical intervention may be required in order to decrease pain and improve function.

Traditional rotator cuff repair is performed by direct visualization of the rotator cuff. This is performed through a three to four inch incision on the shoulder through the deltoid muscle.
Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is a new surgical technique that has evolved over the last decade. Using this technique, the rotator cuff is repaired through three to four one centimeter incisions on the shoulder.

Through these small incisions, the rotator cuff is visualized using a camera, known as an arthroscope, and repaired using instruments as an extension of the surgeons hands.

This less invasive technique has many benefits. The smaller incisions produce less surgical scarring and damage to the deltoid muscle, thereby limiting the risk of the muscle not regaining its full strength.

In addition, the damaged cuff can be better visualized, allowing for a more anatomic repair and the ability to repair previously unrepairable tears.

Most people don't realize how much wear and tear they put on their bodies each day at work — hours of sitting in front of a computer can actually lead to numerous health issues.

Most people likely don't realize just how much wear and tear they put on their bodies each day through the simple routine of reporting to work.

It's true even if your job entails nothing more strenuous than sitting at a desk all day.
That can be an eye-opening realization for anyone who thinks that the only people who need to be careful about physical injuries are those hard-charging adults who participate in marathons or adult basketball leagues.

But hours and hours of sitting in front of a computer also can lead to numerous health issues, from back problems to an aching neck.

After a while, mild symptoms grow less mild and can develop into serious conditions.
Part of the problem is the way people do their work. Often, they slouch at the computer. Sometimes they slump with their head leaning forward. They also don't take breaks the way they should.
Here are some of the aches and pains that "safe" jobs can cause, with suggestions on how you might alleviate them.

Back problems
A whopping 80% of the U.S. population suffers from back problems. That's probably because you don't have to be moving pianos or working a construction site to create stress on your back. Nearly all full-time jobs can contribute to that high percentage.
That's goes for you folks tied to a desk and computer all day. To avoid the bad-back scourge, make sure you maintain good posture and use a chair that supports your back. Also, get up and get away from the computer every now and then.

Neck and shoulder problems
Lots of sedentary jobs lead to neck and shoulder pain. So do jobs that require repetitive motions, such as factory jobs or working a cash register. The prescription is similar to that for back problems. Maintain proper posture and take breaks.

Hip and knee problems.
Maybe you don't sit all day. Maybe you stand. You almost certainly do if you're a nurse, a flight attendant or a waiter.

If so, your knees and hips may not be happy with you for being on your feet so much. Comfortable shoes and good posture can help. So can orthopedic care.
Just which of these problems you might suffer at work will vary depending on the type of job you have and your overall physical condition.
Regardless, regular medical care is important for treating the underlying problem and for staying healthy.

Are you worried about extra pounds? You may be able to find a ton of information about exercise, proper diet, trainings, and more but there is really no magic needed to start shedding off that extra baggage. Read our tips below and start simple by moving as much as possible throughout the day.

Make multiple workstations

No you do not need several office tables for this but all your stuff are still on the same desk but you have to move that office chair and twist your body as you do your tasks for the day. You can also make an area where you work while standing.

Walk while talking over the phone

Walk around while talking over the cellphone. You can opt for a good headset so it will be more convenient when you want to move around.

Walk over to your co-worker

If not necessary avoid emails and do some work stuff by going to the desk of your colleagues. During brief meetings, stand instead of sitting in the room. You can also chat about work while walking around.

Do not bring chairs

If you are going to the park, tailgate, or a concert, do not bring your own chair. Leave the chairs at home . This forces you to stand the whole time.

Move around after eating

After a meal, it will be best to move around. The levels of fat in your blood are highest after eating so move around to help trigger the release of chemicals in the body which makes your metabolism work faster.
